Fields of the Brethan

The Fields of the Brethan (olg. Bretan-Arnen) are a broad plain on both sides of the upper Brethan and one of the main sources of Belkondilian peat.

Geography and Climate

Peat is harvested and dried all along the upper course of the Brethan, most prominently in the Brethan Fields

The Fields of the Brethan extend southward from the Moors of Arnim-Sown, along the western side of the Gap of Ton, until they meet the north-western foothills of the Olgish Highlands in the area surrounding Narn Aran. Located in-between the counties of Atrissar, Ton, and Orinion, they form an open, marshy land more accessible than the swamplands of the young Brethan west of the Lemmi-Dirith but of still of the barrenness typical of western Belkondíl.

With a vegetation mostly encompassing moss and lichen, and the reddish heather that stands behind the name of Narn Aran, the sparse population draws its livelihood mostly from herding of sheep and kine. Closer to the Brethan itself, peatlands dominate, and peat is harvested in great quantities and traded throughout Belkondíl.
